Campaign History

Secondary Billboard - Get Involved

From teachers to city officials, from governors to mayors, and from firemen to celebrities, people of all backgrounds and professions have read with more than 3 MILLION children to kick off Jumpstart’s yearlong program and bring attention to the importance of early education

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record began in 2006 and over the past five years, America has joined in, reading classic stories such as The Little Engine That Could (2006), The Story of Ferdinand (2007), and Corduroy (2008). Last year, records were shattered when Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar was read aloud to children worldwide! 2,019,752 children joined together and shared in this joyous and important experience—raising awareness of the early literacy crisis and helping Jumpstart raise funds to serve children in need!

Year after year, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record continues to break a world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day with an adult in their life. More importantly, the campaign has been a first step toward active participation in solving our early education crisis. Since 2006:
You’ve help us raise $6.2 million to provide books, supplies, and our proven program to children in need
Your support has sponsored nearly 800,000 books for children living in low-income neighborhoods
More than 3 million children have joined in the power of reading

Pledge to read and be part of a fifth year of record-breaking success -- you will join us and more than 2.5 MILLION CHILDREN on October 7, 2010 as together we read Ezra Jack Keats’, The Snowy Day!
Donate to our Online Book Drive and help us bring books and Jumpstart’s valuable programming to children in need
